What is the ASU Literary Society?
The Arkansas State University Literary Society is an on-campus organization that promotes literary interest and academic excellence through publication. Our journal, Tributary, is an annual literary publication consisting entirely of submissions from ASU students (both graduates and undergraduates). Our journal not only provides the student body and surrounding community with an aesthetically pleasing and intellectually challenging form of entertainment, it also provides students from any discipline with the opportunity to have their writing and artwork peer-reviewed and published.
As most students know, getting a work published is one of the most recognized and honored acheivements in the academic world. Submitting to Tributary is an excellent way for students to gain experience with the submission and publishing process. While we realize that Tributary is not an internationally renowned academic journal, we do take pride in the fact that our magazine was judged best in the state for general excellence at the Arkansas College Media Association's April 2004 conference. This award, along with six others, attests to the high standards and quality of our journal.
We begin taking submissions of poetry, fiction (short stories or one-act plays), non-fiction (both creative and analytical), and art (photography, photographic illustrations, slides, or pen & ink drawings) for Tributary each year at the end of the Fall semester, usually late October through the first of December. Submissions are collected in the English & Philosophy Office located in Wilson Hall, room 314. All students submitting pieces to be considered for publication must complete a submission form and include it with their work (please see submission guidelines). All submissions are distributed to the editorial staff without the author's name on them to ensure unbiased selections for the journal.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the ASU Literary Society, please contact us at asulitsociety@yahoo.com. There is an annual ten dollar membership fee, which also covers any submission fees (up to five works). As a member, you may attend meetings, help the editorial staff with screening and copy-editing, and have full voting rights.
In addition, selected works from Tributary (three from each genre) are submitted each spring to the Arkansas College Media Association and judged at their annual spring conference. Winners recieve statewide recognition and are awarded a certificate suitable for framing. Regardless of a student's major or academic interests, being actively involved with the ASU Literary Society and the publication of Tributary is a great way to improve professional and academic skills, build a resume or porfolio, and boost one's confidence.
